She left high school in her second year to join a local theatrical stock company, and at eighteen she joined a traveling theatrical troupe. In 1910, her voice having begun to fail, she decided to seek a career in films and joined the Powers Film Company in the Bronx, New York City. She subsequently worked for the Lubin Company in Philadelphia in 1911, with the American branch of PathÄ FrÅres in Jersey City in 1911╨1912, and for Crystal Films in the Bronx in 1912 1914. For Crystal she appeared in a series of slapstick comedies. The task of turning out a half- or full-reel comedy a week left her exhausted after a year and a half. Following an extended vacation in Europe she joined the Eclectic Film Company, a subsidiary of PathÄ, in 1914 and starred in a 20-episode serial, The Perils of Pauline. The fifth example of an exciting and popular new film genre, The Perils of Pauline was one of the first to exploit the device of a cliff-hanging ending to each episode. It was a great success, in part through the sponsorship and promotion of the Hearst newspapers, and it made Pearl White a star. Over the next six years she made several more serials: The Exploits of Elaine, 1914╨1915, The New Exploits of Elaine, 1915, The Romance of Elaine, 1915, The Iron Claw, 1916, Pearl of the Army, 1916╨1917, The Fatal Ring, 1917, The House of Hate, 1918, The Lightning Raider, 1919, and The Black Secret, 1919╨1920. The serials featured the heroine performing a variety of acrobatic stunts by way of escaping sundry perils; she actually did perform many of them, for she was an agile and energetic woman, but studio publicity claimed she performed them all herself, while in fact stuntmen were used frequently for the dangerous ones. During 1919╨1921 she made ten unmemorable dramatic feature films for the Fox Film Corporation. She made one more serial for PathÄ, Plunder, 1923, and then moved to France. She had earned an estimated $2 million in her short career, and she invested it wisely. In Paris she made one film, Terror (Perils of Paris in the United States), before retiring to a life of luxury. She died in Paris on August 4, 1938.
